2019 District Competition Assignments

In order to address increasingly lopsided MHD districts, this year the MHD Team has decided to experiment with assigned regional districts. These assignments are based on location, school size, and average number of competing projects.  Below see our current assignments based on last year's competition.  If you do not see your school or hometown listed below, please contact the State Coordinator to find out where to register.

We hope that this reshuffling will result in more balanced student competition, shorter and smoother competition days, and a more positive experience for students overall.  At the end of this test-run year, we will be asking for your feedback and suggestion!  In the meantime, if please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Paper and Website Submission Instructions

● Papers must be formatted as .PDF or Word.doc or Word.docx ONLY, NOT .txt, .pub, or .pages files.

● Each paper must be submitted as a single, complete entry (e.g. do NOT email the cover page, body of paper, and bibliography as separate files. All elements of each paper should all be included in one document.)

● Please ask students to name their paper documents with their last name, division, paper. For example: Lastname-SR.pdf. or Lastname-JR.doc.

● Please make sure your division (Junior or Senior) is on the front cover!

Websites MUST be created using the nhd.weebly portal! The process is easy and free. Websites created at other locations will not be entered in the competition!

● Your URL should look something like Each NHD website has an automatically generated identification number that is 8 numbers long. You should NOT have any letters in your URL, nor should you be able to pick what goes into your URL.

● If the address between http:// and is not a string of 8 numbers, but instead asks you to create a custom URL like, you can easily convert it.

● If you registered for a regular Weebly account you can convert it to a NHD Weebly automatically. Simply use your Username and Password to login through and click the "Convert" button when prompted. This will switch your Weebly account over to a NHD Weebly and assign you a new URL with the correct 8-digit format.

● PUBLISH YOUR WEBPAGE! When you've finished making your edits for the day, do not forget to publish your website! You will find the Publish Now button in the upper right-hand corner. Remember to publish your website each and every time you edit your site - and make sure you've published your site before your local contest lock-out dates, or you may be disqualified from participating in the contest!

Student Registration Instructions

Create an Account

In the box on the righthand side of the screen titled "Create an Account," fill in your name and email address. Even if you competed in a contest in a previous year, you still need to create a new account for this contest.
Register Your School and Teacher

When prompted, find your school and then select your teacher in the drop-down lists.

If you are homeschooled or do not see your school name as an option, email for help.
If you do not see your teacher's name as an option, ask your teacher if they have registered on the website yet. If the answer is yes and you still can't find them, email for help.
If you are not working with a teacher, email and they will set you up with an account.

Set Up Project Entry

Individual Projects: If you are competing individually, click on "Create a Project" and follow the instructions.

Group Projects:

a. If you are the first person in your group to register, click on "Create a Project" and follow the instructions. Once you are done, you will receive an email with a Team Key that you must send to your group members. A Team Key will look like a long string of letters and numbers (Example: b64d6ed7-b151-4469-bec8-63dc2f041ea4).

b. If you are not the first person in your group to register, click on "Link/Join an Existing Group" and enter the Team Key you received from your team member (see above).

Specific Project Instructions

Websites: You will see a place where you can enter your Weebly website key. This will NOT lock out your website until the deadline--you can still edit it until the Website Lockout (Wednesday, February 20th 2019 by 11:59pm). Make sure your website is published at this time!

Papers: You will see a place where you can upload your paper document. You can submit your paper now or later, and you can make changes to it and re-upload it up until the Paper Submission Deadline (Wednesday, February 20th 2019 by 11:59pm). Note: you MUST upload your final draft of your paper by the deadline or you will not be fully registered!

Permissions and Waivers

Once you confirm your personal information and project entry, you will be taken to a page where you and your parents/guardians will respond to NHD permissions and waivers. Note: your parents or guardians MUST fill out this section with you.

Teacher Registration Instructions

All teachers must register on our website, whether or not they plan to attend the competition.  Teachers need to register before their students, so that students can select them during their own registration process.  There are no registration fees for teachers.

Create an Account

In the box on the righthand side of the screen titled "Create an Account," fill in your name and email address and follow prompts to create a teacher account. Even if you participated in a contest in a previous year, you still need to create a new account for this contest.

IMPORTANT: Teachers need to sign up before students so that students can register under their teacher's name. This allows teachers to keep track of their students' registrations and, if the school is paying for registration fees, collect student invoices for a Payment Order (see below).

Select Your School

You will be prompted to select your school from a drop-down menu. If you cannot find your school listed, please contact and they will add your school to the website.

Viewing Student Information

When logged in, teachers can click on the "My Students" tab at the top of the webpage. This will take you to a list of the students who are linked to you in the system. Note: A teacher’s student will only appear once the student has created their account.

By clicking on the student, teachers can choose to view and edit information, or to link/unlink the student to an entry.

Registration Fees

Each participating student has a registration fee of $12 at Regionals and $14 at States.  You can choose to pay online or by check. The deadline for registration payments is Friday, February 22nd.  We are grateful to our partner, the Mass Cultural Council, for providing the funds that have allowed us to reduce registration fees in 2019.
  • Registration fees are per student, not per project; each student in a group must register
  • Every student submitting a project must complete registration and pay the fee, even if they are not present at the competition.  This means that if a group competes but one member cannot attend the competition, all group members still pay registration.
  • Due to the fact that registration fees go toward paying for competition costs, MHD will not be issuing refunds for contest registrations.
IMPORTANT: if these costs prevent students or schools from participating, please check out Fee Assistance instructions below to discuss how MHD can help.

If your school is paying: DO NOT CHOOSE THE "PAY ONLINE" option. Instead, select the option to "pay by check." This will create an invoice that your school can use to pay your fee. Once you have selected this option, you are all set!

If the student/family is paying: You can either pay online with a debit or credit card, or send a check to MHD.

If you are paying by check, selecting this option on the website will create an invoice in your account. Print off this invoice and mail it along with a check made out to "Massachusetts History Day" to the following address:

Massachusetts History Day

c/o Kate Melchior

1154 Boylston Street

Boston MA 02215

There are no registration fees for teachers.  However, if your school is paying for student registrations, you can do so through your teacher account by following these steps:

  • Click on the "Store" tab.
  • Click on the "Students" tab, next to the "Order History" tab.
  • All of the students associated with your teacher account will appear on the list. Check the box next to the student(s) for whom the teacher or school is paying.
  • Add fees to the cart and click the blue "Checkout and Pay" button
  • If the school is paying by check or Purchase Order, select "Generate Invoice." Confirm and print this invoice, and present it to the school to create a purchase order.
Checks should be made out to "Massachusetts History Day." Mail this invoice along with the check to the following address:
